As a makeup artist based in London, some of my regular clients are women over 40 and they experience the signs of ageing skin even though ageing is a natural and beautiful process. Many women in this age category learn certain makeup techniques to still make themselves look amazing whether their skin isn't as plump or tight as it once was or some fine lines have appeared!
Here I've created a few makeup tips for women over 40 - tips which will help you look amazing in your forties and will just make life so much easier when applying your makeup.
Pre Makeup Tip 1
When going onto skincare, use an hydrating primer and moisturiser to create a smoother canvas on your skin and add glow to the skin before applying makeup . My ‘go to’ moisturiser is called Skin Food Light from th brand Weleda and my ‘go to’ primer is the Milk Primer, also from Weleda.
Pre Makeup Tip 2
Also make sure you exfoliate your skin weekly to remove dead skin cells and brighten the skin.
Makeup Tip 1 - All About Foundation
Consider a light facial oil or serum before applying your foundation — this really boosts radiance on your skin without heaviness.
Avoid matte or full-coverage formulas as they can settle into lines On your skin which can't really over exaggerate your age.
Instead use a hydrating, light-to-medium coverage foundation (like NARS Light Reflecting or Charlotte tilbury flawless filter). These are so much less harsh for the skin and are more natural looking and don't settle into the slight wrinkles which is definitely what we don't want!
Also, apply with a damp sponge and blend out your foundation or skin tint .For concealer go 1-2 shades lighter than you normally would. I highly recommend a concealer from the Natasha Denona rang as this is a fantastic light to medium coverage and sits perfectly on more mature skin.
Makeup Tip 2 - All About Blusher
Another makeup tip for women over 40s! - when moving onto blusher , bronzer and highlighter ,you really want to use cream products to melt into the skin for a more youthful, natural finish that sits on the skin perfectly. I suggest avoiding powdery products as these again can sit into the wrinkles exaggerating age which is what we are wanting to avoid.
Browse really defines the face but we don't want to overdo the brows as this can in itself can age your face, make you look harsh or look overdone or outdated. As a makeup artist, I make the brows full but natural for my over 40s clients. Gone are the days where we want really heavy eyebrows or try to replicate the 90s which was really well known for very thin, hardly existent eyebrows! Today it is getting that balance where the eyebrows look natural and healthy.
I suggest first of all lightly filling in your brows with a pencil or tinted brow gel. This creates
a defined but soft brow bringing back structure to your face.
When moving onto eyeliner you will want to avoid harsh black liner and opt instead for eyeshadows; a dark brown eyeshadow or black eyeshadow and the technique is to use a little flat eyeshadow brush to gently apply on the lash line and this will create a softer eyeliner look on the eye. This avoids that really harsh look that liquid liner can give you.
When you move onto mascara, you will want to curl the lashes first and then use lengthening, non-clumping mascara to apply onto the eyelashes and open up your eyes. Individual lashes or soft strip lashes can also be added if you like extra volume to the eyes. Keep it simple!
Makeup Tip 1 - All About Then Lips
When moving onto the lips, you can use a lip liner and I always opt for nude pink tones or nude brown tones for women over 40 as this keeps the look natural and doesn't create harsh effects.
If you opt for hydrating lipsticks that also give a slight gloss to the lips and then if you want to add more gloss to the lips, go ahead and add a lipgloss. My ‘go to’ lip gloss is the Fenty lip glosses as they feel smooth and luxurious and are a pleasure to wear..
Makeup Tip 1 - Final Makeup Tip Setting The Skin
When you have all your makeup done, finish simply setting the skin. this really just locks in your products so you have a longer lasting effect all day. When setting the skin, try using something like the Charlotte tilbury setting powder and simply powder gently under the eyes and in the T zone on your face (Please see image below which indicates what the T zone area is).
I really hope this has given you some great makeup tips for women over 40 as well as great indication of how to look great and how to look after your makeup and apply it when you're in your 40s. few makeup tips for women over 40
