January is not the most popular time of the year for a bride and groom to get married, but Winter is a truly special time as we have beautiful, crisp blue skies and great lighting which is awesome for wedding photographs as well. Also, when it comes to bridal makeup and hiring a wedding makeup artist, your makeup does not ‘run’ like it does in hot Summer weather. So even though it can be cold, there are certain clear benefits to having a January Winter wedding. Also, wedding venues tend to be cheaper as well as a majority of brides tend to opt for spring or summer weddings.
The only issue brides need to watch out for when it comes to their bridal makeup artist and their wedding makeover, is dry skin and lips due to the cold weather, but this can be easily counteracted with creams and moisturisers. There are also some great winter wedding makeup looks that look awesome in the colder weather.
Here are 8 great tips to ensure you feel and look amazing on your Winter wedding day and hope they inspire you!

8 Top Tips for January and Winter Wedding Makeup
Even though it is a chilly time of the year with frosty landscapes in view, January Winter weddings are really romantic and beautiful in winter scenery.
This article is set to give you 8 top tips to help you look radiant and magical at your winter wedding. Tying the knot in Winter seems like going against the grain of many brides who favour the July and August months in the UK, but there are certain clear advantages to getting married in winter and we are going to cover these bridal makeup looks now.

1 - Looking After Your Skincare In the Months Prior to your Wedding
We all know what cold weather can do to our skin and it can also make our lips very chapped so a really important aspect is to focus on your skin care in the month's prior to your January wedding. The key here is hydration all the way as the last thing you want is your wedding makeup to appear flaky on your skin.
Glass facials for a few months before the wedding are a great idea to cleanse and plump the skin up before your wedding makeover. But, also using a really good moisturizer such as facefood light or bobbi brown face base, day and night, can protect the skin and help makeup be applied easily and flawlessly. We also all know that excessive alcohol can make our skin look blotchy so avoid alcohol or binge drinking on nights out for a few months prior to your wedding and make sure you drink plenty of water and fluids.

Looking after your lips is essential prior to your wedding makeup artist doing your makeover, so make sure you use a lip balm and apply plenty at night time as well when you sleep so they stay hydrated during the day. Lip scrubs can also be really useful but just make sure you never let your lips get to a point where they're all chapped and sore as applying lipstick on chapped lips is not going to help your bridal makeup.
2 - Using Both Powder and Cream Foundation and Skin Tints
Cream based foundations and skin tints will hydrate your skin on top of already applied moisturisers. They will also give you that glowy look as well as provide a smooth finish to your skin. Using cream based blushers can also enhance your foundation and can be a lot easier to apply.
I tend to use skin tints and cream blushes from Kylie Cosmetics (not the cheapest on the market but worth every penny), as I find these are great long lasting products which stay on your skin throughout your wedding day and are so much easier to apply on the skin than cheaper products.
Naturally before we start applying foundations and skin tints we will be using a primer that hydrates your skin once again on top of your moisturiser. The key is matching your natural skin tones, and often winter brides can go maybe a shade or two lighter as there are less daylight hours hence a lighter tone is often quite appropriate. Naturally using blenders to blend in cream primers and foundations and skin tints will also leave a much smoother finish.
3 - Light-Reflecting Foundations and Concealers
The light in Winter can be a little unforgiving, maybe a little harsher than in the summer months, so opting for light-reflecting foundations and concealers can help you look flawless and beautiful.
The inner corners of the eye can often be quite dark so using a touch of highlighter in this area can brighten and enhance your makeup. Choosing your highlighter to match your skin tone is a really important part of your Winter wedding makeup and I often mix a touch of highlighter with foundation to create a stunning glowy base.

4 - False Lashes or Waterproof Eye Makeup - What Is Best?
Many of my brides love the false lashes I offer on my wedding makeovers; from really natural and light false lashes for the more natural bride to heavier and longer lashes for the more glam bride. Being in the cold air can make your eyes water, so having false lashes is clearly not an issue as they are not going to run. This gives you peace of mind that you can remain ‘smudge free’ all day long
If for some reason you really don't want the false lashes, using extremely long wearing and waterproof mascara is the key to stop any smudging in really cold weather when your eyes can water.
5 - What Lipstick Shades for Your Winter Wedding
Against the cold wintery landscape, a red shade of lipstick can look really good especially if you have a snowy background to contrast against. These darker pigments tend to stay on longer as well but they may not suit every bride. Younger generations tend to like the more natural nude look so I tend to work with all options and talk through with the bride during their wedding makeup trial to assess their preferences.
There is no right and wrong answer on what lipsticks are suitable for your wedding makeup; it can really depend on your preference and your age group and it's best to give this some consideration well before your wedding day.
But if you are getting married in Winter, consider carefully whether you want that bolder lip ruby red glow to contrast against the weather for your wedding photographs. Or whether you prefer the more brown and nude natural shades with lip gloss.

6 - Hydration Can Make All The Difference
I mentioned earlier that this is a really important factor for your Winter wedding makeover. This needs to be considered well before your wedding day and your wedding bridal makeover. Staying hydrated is key and also using really good moisturisers both in the day and at night time prior to your wedding and on your wedding day is going to save your skin from any dryness or chapping so your wedding makeup artist can apply your makeup flawlessly.
I find that moisturisers containing hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and/or glycerin can really make all the difference. Then, additionally using a good moisturiser like I've mentioned above and applying extra moisturiserto keep your skin feeling really supple and smooth.
Needless to say, dealing with chapped lips and avoiding that big time is going to be super important when you kiss your groom!
7 - Using Warm Tones in Your Wedding Makeup - Bronze and Gold
Using bronze, gold, copper and deep browns can really add depth to your makeup on your wedding day. These colours are not only suitable all year round but they are extremely suitable for winter weddings.
These types of colours tend not to tire you throughout your wedding day; what I mean by that is if you use brighter colours such as blues, you can get tired of looking at this throughout your wedding day. Also bronze and golds are extremely good at staying on and looking very professional throughout the whole duration of the day and night of your wedding.
8 - Finish Off With Good Style Hair
Naturally your wedding makeup and your wedding makeup artist needs to focus on your desired makeup look so that it not only looks amazing but it lasts all day long. But it is good to frame your makeup with a hairstyle that suits your face too.

We can use soft curls, uplifts and temporary extensions to give you the finished look of hair and makeup together. Also using hair pieces and hair pins that are designed for weddings is going to add elegance to your overall wedding makeup and wedding dress.
Working with a professional hair and makeup artist to ensure perfection with your makeup and your hair is key to feeling absolutely amazing when you walk down the aisle to say ‘I do!’. Working with a professional makeup artist will also ensure that you have the bridal makeup and look you have dreamt of and that is going to last all day long at your Winter wedding.
